This activity introduces to students the process of software development, particularly the arduous task of composing lines of code that a computer can understand. In a fun variation, students are tasked with writing detailed, sequential steps for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

This activity introduces to students the concept of visual communication by way of the ubiquitous icon. Upon completing this activity, students will have a better understanding of what an icon is, how it came about, and how it has transformed the way humans interact with computers. Students will have the opportunity to create their own custom icons and give rationale for their designs.

This activity introduces to students the concept of intellectual property as it pertains to computer software. This activity introduces to students the creative process of invention. Specifically, students will have the opportunity to “invent” something for which they perceive a need, and then discuss the process by which the invention came about. Upon completion of this activity, students will have gained understanding of the inventive process, and appreciation for those who dare to take risks.
